Madan Lal, a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, has advised the protesting wrestlers to talk to the government about their demands and expressed optimism that the Sports Minister would listen to them and find a solution to their grievances. Madan Lal’s advice comes a day after the 1983 World Cup-winning team wrote a letter in support of the protesting wrestlers.
The former Indian all-rounder also said that since the FIR has been registered in the matter and the Police is already taking action the matter should now be left to the judiciary. He said, “We are with the protesting wrestlers but I would like to say that when FIR has been registered & Police is taking action, let the judiciary take action..”
The 1983 World Cup winning squad member was also concerned about the wrestler’s protest becoming a political cause, he said, “What I find weird is that this is a protest of wrestlers, but political parties are entering it. I would want the wrestlers to get this resolved on their own with the Govt. When political parties enter, it becomes a political issue.”
The 1983 World Cup Winning squad that includes Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri, and Sunil Gavaskar among others had penned a letter in support of the protesting wrestlers on Friday, they wrote, “We are distressed and disturbed at the unseemly visuals of our champion wrestlers being manhandled. We are also most concerned that they are thinking of dumping their hard-earned medals into river Ganga,”
“Those medals have involved years of effort, sacrifice, determination, and grit and are not only their own but the nation’s pride and joy. We urge them not to take any hasty decision in this matter and also fervently hope that their grievances are heard and resolved quickly. Let the law of the land prevail,” the statement added
The 1983 World Cup winning squad includes Sunil Gavaskar, Mohinder Amarnath, K Srikanth, Syed Kirmani, Yashpal Sharma, Madan Lal, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Sandeep Patil, Kirti Azad and Roger Binny.
